Discipline Issues

I teach Pre-K through 7th grade, and most of my students have come up through my school’s kindergarten.  Because of this, they are at a pretty high level.  My school teaches regular subjects (Social Studies, Math, Science…) and it is usually a bit difficult for students who come from other schools.

Right now, we are having big issues at my school disciplining a certain class.  They are about 7-9 years old and their English is at a very low level.  They got moved up way too early from our Basic English program (which is lacking anyway).  I’ve had low level classes before, but they kids are all terribly behaved as well.  One of them is possibly the worse student I have ever had.  He has responded to no punishment or reward system I have tried.  He is constantly disrupting class, getting kicked out of other classes, causing fights and mocking teachers.  Today I sent him to the back row of the class to sit by himself.  I told the other students to pretend he wasn’t there and I erased his name from the board (I usually keep track of points).  It worked, in that he reacted.  He got angry and yelled, while we all ignored him.  Usually he just laughs at all discipline.  However, this made me feel like shit.  I think I am a good teacher. I like it and I think it will be a life long thing for me.  This is not how I want to teach.  I don’t won’t to give up on students, especially 9 year olds.

Anyone have any suggestions?

don’t know what you’ve tried...what you haven’t, or what specific issues you’re having,...
